Are you confused when you rock up to a carpet cleaning job? Which chemical should I use and how should I use it? Like a lot of your peers, you have 20 different carpet cleaning chemicals in the van to select from, all different brands, the bottles all read well, but you have so many because you keep trying new formulas due to poor results from all the other cleaning chemicals in the van!

Confidence is a wonderful thing. Doubt makes for a tough day at the office.

I’d like to focus this article to carpet cleaners using the ‘Hot Water Extraction” method either using a portable carpet cleaning machine or truck mounted setup. This process is also often referred to as carpet steam cleaning. And in particular we will look at the cleaning process for carpets. Easy as 1-2-3!

Step 1: Pre-Vacuum. It’s really important to get all of the dry dust, dirt, hair, dead skin, fluff and any other debris out of the pile prior to cleaning. Your cleaning results will benefit and your clients will benefit from better hygiene from not having those nasty things in the air or in the carpet. You cannot go past our new upright vacuum cleaner from Tennant for this task. This is fair dinkum, the best upright vacuum cleaner on the market and yes, the price is right! It will blow you away, guaranteed!

Step 2: Pre-Spray. Most professionals won’t look past one of our inline injection prespray units, they just save so much time and hassles. If you don’t have one, try one. If not, a basic pump-up sprayer still works. Split your dilutions into 2 groups. One for light to medium dirty carpets, and the other for really dirty jobs! At this point, it’s time to do some consolidating in your van. A good way to start would be to toss out all those old, low performance pre-spray chemicals that are taking up  space, confusing you, are hit and miss and a hazard! Replace them with two. Powerboost for the majority of your jobs, I-Extract for Wool or other fibres you are concerned about or can’t identify. The dilution instructions are on the label for easy use. The reason we pre-spray is to give the chemical dwell time (5-10 minutes.) Also so you can rinse the chemicals and dirt out with fresh water.

Step 3: Extract. Your machine is where it’s at. Hot water at a minimum of 200psi is best. And you need heaps of suck to extract the dirty water out for fast drying times.
